National Green Corps (NGC)
 

The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India nominated GEER Foundation as the nodal agency for Gujarat State for the programme of National Green Corps (NGC) in the year 2001.

To effectively conduct environmental education and awareness programmes, the Foundation has formed 6,842 eco-clubs in as many schools with 50 students & one teacher in each eco-club. The network of  6,842 teachers work towards sensitizing 3,42,100 students from different parts of Gujarat  on environment-related issues. The Foundation has formed 250 eco-clubs per district in Gujarat and appointed District Coordinators. It works in synchronization  with the line department officers- Dy. Conservator of Forests (DCF) & District Education Officer (DEO) and has formed two advisory committees- State level steering committee and district implementation & monitoring committee.

As per the task assigned by the Gujarat Forest Department, GEER Foundation has successfully achieved the target of forming 300 eco-clubs (150 eco-clubs formed under NGC programme and 150 eco-clubs formed under Brihad Gir programme). in 300 villages surrounding the Gir National Park and Sanctuary (Junagadh, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts) for conservation of the Asiatic Lion.

 

Recent Activities

Zonal Workshops for NGC 2011-2012                                                               Colour Plate

  • 1140 participants including students and teachers.

  • Central theme of Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Issues.

  • Focus on below mentioned subjects:

  • Information Exchange: Presentation of selected innovative activities carried out by selected Eco-Clubs.

  • Discussing Issues: Conference of Eco-Club members / students / NGC cadets for the important ecological issues for their respective zone.

  • Leadership: Training of Eco-Club members / students / NGC cadets for the ecological leadership.

  • Skill Development: Training for various documentation practices.

  • Exposure: Exposure to current scientific research in the field of ecology and current issues.

  • Introduction and launching of “Pariyavaran Mitra” Scheme.

 Ahmedabad Zone

  • 220 participants.

  • Collected about 100 kg of waste plastics at the roadside of the venue.

  • Presentation of various activities of Eco Clubs in their respective regions by participants.

  • Presentation of bird rescue operations.

  • Visited Science City, Ahmedabad.

 Surat Zone

  • 201 participants.

  • Presentation on various measures taken for pollution control.

  • Special presentation on water conservation.

  • Puppet show with a theme of wildlife conservation.

  • Presentation on ecological leadership.

 Vadodara Zone

  • 260 participants.

  • Presentation on pollution control, save environment by schools.

  • Special presentation on water conservation.

  • Presentation on photo documentation.

  • Session on people’s participation for environment conservation.

  • Bird watching at Vadhvana Lake

Rajkot Zone

  • 250 participants.

  • Presentation on pollution control, save environment by students and teachers.

  • Presentation on various Eco Club activities.

  • Film show on Global Warming.

  • Bird watching at Randarda nursery.

 Mehsana Zone

  • 210 participants.

  • Presentation on Global Warming.

 Rajkot Zone

  • Organized at Shri Kadvibai Virani Kanya Vidyalaya, Rajkot.

  • 158 participants (111 Students and 47 Teachers) from Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli and Porbandar Districts participated in the workshop.

  • Presentation on people’s participation for prevention and control of pollution.

  • Presentation on various Eco Club activities.

  • Discussion on various environmental issues in the zone.

Vadodara Zone

  • Organized at Shri Dadabhagwan Ashram, Kelanpuri (Vadodara).

  • 130 participants (70 Students and 60 Teachers) from Vadodara, Anand, Narmada and Dahod participated in the workshop.

  • Presentation on people’s participation for prevention and control of pollution.

  • Presentation on various Eco Club activities.

  • Discussion on various environmental issues in the zone.

  • Bird watching at Vadhvana Wetland.

  • All the participants had also taken the Green Oath for environment conservation.

Valsad Zone

  • Organized at Forest Nursery cum Demonstration Centre, Panas (Ta.:Kaprada, Di.: Valsad).

  • 103 participants (74 Students and 29 Teachers) from Valsad, Bharuch, Dang, Navsari, Tapi and Surat Districts participated in the workshop.

  • Presentation on various Eco Club activities.

  • Discussion on various environmental issues in the zone.

  • Jungle trail around forest nursery with special focus on medicinal plants.

 Kachchh Zone

  • Organized at Van Chetna Kendra, Bhuj, Kachchh.

  • 36 participants (24 Students and 12 Teachers) from 10 Talukas of Kachchh District participated in the workshop.

  • Presentation on various Eco Club activities.

  • Discussion on various environmental issues in the zone.

  • Film show on Climate Change.

  • Special session focused on wildlife of Kachchh.

 Mehsana Zone

  • Organized at Kotyark Temple, Mahudi (Ta.: Mansa, Di.: Gandhinagar).

  • 76 participants (53 Students and 23 Teachers) and 60 other participants (forest officials, local environment activities, NGOs) from Mehsana, Banaskantha, Patan and Sabarkantha Districts participated in the workshop.
