The
Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India has
nominated GEER Foundation as the Nodal Agency for Gujarat State
for the programme of National Green Corps (NGC). The programme would be further strengthened and the schools
which have forwarded their demands for eco-clubs would also be
covered in the next year. More awareness programmes would be
conducted through the members of the eco-clubs. It has also been
decided to organise a big gathering involving eco-clubs from the
state and outside with the purpose of sharing the experiences
and deciding future strategies with more concerted efforts.
The Foundation has formed more than 6,501 eco-clubs- 50 students in each eco-club
and one teacher have been formed in as many schools. It covers
about 3,25,000 students and 6,501 teachers to sensitize people
about environment related issues by involving school children
and teachers of the eco-clubs.
Gujarat Forest Department has assigned a job to GEER Foundation to form
300 eco-clubs in surrounding 300
villages of the Gir National Park and Sanctuary (Junagadh, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts) for
the conservation of Asiatic Lion. The
Foundation has already achieved the target of 300 eco-clubs (150
eco-clubs formed under NGC programme and 150 eco-clubs formed
under Brihad Gir programme). |
